Where do I find books?
There are a lot of different places that you can find your books. You can find them at thrift stores like the Goodwill or Salvation Army, or you can find them at weekend garage sales, or you can even find them at your local used bookstore on the clearance rack.

How do I identify books to check?
Identifying the books that you want to check is an important skill that you will develop with experience. You don’t want to check all of the books that you see, because it would take too long to find the good ones. You might only end up buying one in one hundred if you did it this way. Generally, you want to focus on newer non-fiction. Self-help, religion, cooking, arts and crafts, and text books are usually a good place to start. Fiction, is also good, but you may have to check more fiction books than non-fiction books to get the same number of buys.

Our experienced scouts often end up purchasing about one out of every ten non-fiction books that they call in.

How do I pay for the books?
You have to use your own money to purchase the books you find. However, for each book that you send us, BookTrolls will send you a flat rate of $3.75 to cover the cost of the book and to pay you for your time and effort.

We have found that generally books around the country are about $1.75 each. If this is what you are paying for your books, you will make $2.00 for each book that you send us ($3.75 payment - $1.75 cost of book). If you find the books for less than $1.75 you will make more money, but if you find the books for more than $1.75 you will make less money. Most of our full-time scouts find more than 300 books per week.

Can I keep some of the books?

Do I get reimbursed for my mileage or other expenses?
As private contractors, BookTrolls does not reimburse you for any mileage or expenses associated with finding your books. However, the IRS does allow you to write off these expenses against your personal income tax.

Do you support Mac? Linux?
We provide a barcode scanner and a Treo 650 PDA phone to experienced scouts who wish to scout professionally. This Treo must be connected to your PC every night for internet access. You run special software called Softick PPP on your PC to bridge your Treo to the internet. This software runs only on Windows -- not Mac or unix. Alternatively, you may pay for monthly data service on your Treo to bypass the need for any computer at all. You'll need an unlimited data plan, but connection speed is irrelevant. More details available upon signup.
